¿Qué es moda?

La primera vez que escuché lo más parecido a una definición de la palabra moda, no fue precisamente en un contexto relacionado con lo que yo misma, a simple vista, podría haber apuntado.

 

Y es que en una clase de matemáticas con no más de 13 años (hace ya 8 años de eso) no esperaba encontrar lo que yo entendería después como la más pura y simple definición de ese gran concepto.

En el ámbito de la estadística, el concepto de moda hace referencia, ni más ni menos, que al valor que más veces se repite en una distribución: el valor más común.

En un principio, no cabría ninguna conexión con la estadística y lo que por moda generalmente se entiende. Sin embargo, he aquí el núcleo de la moda: lo más común.

Tras años y años mirando y admirando moda he conseguido, he conseguido por fin entender ese concepto estadístico (por qué algo es moda y por qué no lo es).

Por supuesto limitarse a ello al hablar de moda es quedarse en una gota de agua de las que forman el océano. Y es que hablar de moda sin hacer referencia a la ropa, el diseño y los diseñadores, la costura, las modelos, el maquillaje o la fotografía es casi como hablar de París y no mencionar el Louvre, la Torre Eiffel, el Arco del Triunfo o Nôtre Dame.

Sin embargo, la moda no se conforma con ello, se extiende más allá de un ámbito, un lugar o una época. La moda usa y abusa de todo aquello que le rodea, y siempre se ve individualizada según los ojos de quién la mira, según la fuente de la que se nutre.

Pese a todo ello, de una forma o de otra, siempre que cuestiono la moda acabo llegando a la misma definición aprendida en una clase de introducción a la estadística.

It was not the expected context where I first heard a definition of fashion, at least what I had ever thought fashion was.

It was in a Maths class, no older than 13 years old (8 years so far) and I did not expect to find out what I later understood as the most straightforward definition of that great concept.

In the field of statistics, when we talk about fashion we just mean, the value that is repeated more times in a distribution: the most common value.

At first, no one would set any connection with statistics and what is usually understood by fashion. However, here is the core of fashion: the most common.

After years and years watching and admiring fashion, I managed to understand the statistical concept (why something is fashionable and what something else is not).

Bounding this statistical definition to talk about fashion is to stay in a drop of water from the ocean forming. There’s no way to talk about fashion without reference to clothing, design and designers, sewing, models, makeup or photography. That is almost like talking about Paris and not to mention the Louvre, the Eiffel Tower, the Arc de Triomphe or Notre Dame.

Fashion is not satisfied with it, extends beyond a sphere, a place or a time. Fashion uses and abuses of all that surrounds him, and always see eye individualized to the beholder, the source from which it feeds.

Despite all this, one way or another, I question the fashion always just coming to the same definition learned in a class of introductory statistics.
